The German beauty scene is facing a significant shake-up as Parfümerie Pieper has announced its insolvency. Despite this challenging development, the retailer will keep its 140 stores and online operations running for the time being.
In a recent communication to suppliers, the company conveyed that it entered self-administration on November 20, following a filing at the Bochum Local Court in Germany. Parfümerie Pieper aims to navigate through its restructuring phase while “maintaining ongoing business operations.” The Business of Beauty has reached out for further comments from the company.
Reports indicate that the Herne-based retailer will cover employee salaries for three months during this tumultuous period. Current management will stay in charge, although vendors will need to file for their outstanding claims after the commencement of insolvency proceedings, expected to begin on February 1, 2026. For any orders placed after self-administration takes effect, payments will be handled by the insolvency estate.
Founded in 1931, Parfümerie Pieper boasts an impressive e-commerce platform alongside its physical stores, featuring iconic brands like Chanel, Estée Lauder, and Lancôme. The fate of its brick-and-mortar locations will be determined as part of the ongoing insolvency process.
The wider beauty retail market in Germany is also feeling pressure, with signs of dwindling consumer demand. Earlier this year, in March 2025, German beauty giant Douglas lowered its annual forecasts due to a notable shift in spending habits. Its report from September reiterated the same outlook and indicated plans for a new mid-term forecast, influenced by various global economic and political circumstances.
