LONDON — Renowned British department store John Lewis has appointed Jacqui Markham as its new fashion creative director. In her new role, Markham will focus on enhancing the store’s own-brand lines, which encompass womenswear, menswear, and childrenswear.

Markham arrives at John Lewis with a wealth of experience from her previous role as creative director at Whistles. Prior to that, she held key positions as global design director at Topshop and design director at ASOS, showcasing her extensive background in retail and fashion.

She takes over from Queralt Ferrer, who has resigned after four years of leading the store’s fashion initiatives.

According to John Lewis, Markham’s appointment marks a significant stride in the company’s strategy to enhance its own-brand fashion offerings. The retailer emphasizes the importance of having a clear creative direction and is committed to ongoing investment in this area.

The company noted that Markham is recognized for her ability to create unique and successful collections while maintaining a strong focus on design, quality, and customer relevance.

Rachel Morgans, the director of fashion at John Lewis, expressed excitement about Markham joining the team at this pivotal moment for the retailer’s fashion sector. She highlighted Markham’s vast expertise and her notable ability to produce outstanding designs, which is vital for realizing their future creative vision.

Markham expressed her enthusiasm about joining John Lewis, stating that it is an important time in the store’s storied history. She is eager to contribute to shaping the future vision and bringing innovative ideas to life.

To strengthen and diversify its fashion offerings, John Lewis has been actively pursuing various initiatives.

Later this month, the retailer is set to unveil the second John Lewis x Rejina Pyo collaboration, alongside a new 15-piece capsule collection developed in partnership with Amanda Wakeley. These exclusive offerings will complement an expanded selection of new brands such as Samsoe Samsoe, Mother, St. Agni, Patagonia, Belstaff, Missoma, and Completedworks.

Markham’s new role aligns with John Lewis’ ongoing commitment to investing in fashion, which includes recent refurbishments of both womenswear and menswear sections at its flagship Oxford Street store.

The retailer is also enhancing its beauty offerings significantly. This includes substantial investments made last August to revamp shop floors and introduce immersive beauty halls across various locations such as Liverpool, Bluewater, Solihull, and Cambridge.

Currently, John Lewis boasts over 540 beauty counters, nearly 70 dedicated treatment rooms, and more than 400 beauty services throughout the UK.

With a total of 36 stores and a robust omnichannel presence, John Lewis partners with notable hospitality brands, including Benugo, Ori Cafe, and Jamie Oliver’s Cookery School. The retailer has also collaborated with Waterstones and David Clulow Opticians.

In 2024, John Lewis was honored with a Royal Warrant, recognizing its status as a supplier of household goods and furnishings to King Charles III.

The arrival of Jacqui Markham heralds a new chapter for John Lewis, aiming to elevate its fashion offerings and enhance its competitive edge in an ever-evolving retail landscape. With her critical eye for design and a commitment to quality, Markham stands to make a significant impact as she embarks on this exciting journey.
