The prestigious house of Hermès is expanding its creative horizons to the shores of Oahu with the arrival of its Petit H concept. From August 7 through August 23, a specialized installation will be hosted within the Hermès boutique at the Ala Moana Center, showcasing the brand’s unique approach to luxury upcycling and imaginative design.

A Collaborative Tribute to Hawaiian Heritage

The installation is led by Godefroy de Virieu, the artistic director of Petit H, in partnership with local artist Marques Hanalei Marzan. The space features vibrant, geometric patterns that draw deep inspiration from traditional Hawaiian culture and artisanal techniques. Specifically, Marzan’s work incorporates the influence of Kapa—a traditional bark cloth—to create a rhythmic and colorful backdrop for the collection.

Diane Mahady, President and CEO of Hermès of the Americas, noted that the collaboration represents a seamless joining of French and Hawaiian heritage. The scenography is designed to highlight one-of-a-kind objects within a refined atmosphere that celebrates the reuse of natural materials, a core value of the Petit H métier.

    Featured Masterpieces and One-of-a-Kind Objects

The Honolulu showcase will feature an array of whimsical, repurposed items that demonstrate the brand’s artisanal versatility. Among the highlights are freestanding horse-shaped shelves constructed from leather-clad maple wood and accented with crystal bud vases. The collection also includes several items that nod to island life and modern play, such as an azure surfboard and a wicker-basket skateboard.

Other exclusive pieces on display include:

    • A fringed horsebits swing made from calf leather and oak.
    • Terracotta jars and a leather-bound globe.
    • A yellow Soleil d’Hermès porcelain vase.

These items illustrate the playful and ingenious nature of the Petit H workshop, where materials are given a second life through unexpected forms.

The Evolution of the Petit H Workshop

Launched in 2010, Petit H is based in the Parisian suburb of Pantin. The workshop operates on the principle of “reverse creation,” where designers and craftspeople utilize leftover materials from other Hermès production lines—including silk, leather, crystal, metal, and porcelain—to create entirely new, functional art pieces. This approach ensures that no fine material goes to waste, turning remnants into high-fashion collectibles that embody the spirit of innovation.

    Summary of the Honolulu Installation

The Petit H residency at Ala Moana Center offers a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to experience the intersection of high-end upcycling and local Hawaiian artistry. By blending the sustainable philosophy of the Pantin workshop with the cultural insights of Marques Hanalei Marzan, Hermès provides a fresh perspective on luxury that is both environmentally conscious and culturally resonant. This limited-time engagement serves as a celebration of craftsmanship, heritage, and the endless possibilities of creative reuse.
